A Brief Biography

Joseph Lawrence

Mr. Lawrence became interested in art in grade school.  By his senior year in high school, he was taking two hours of classes a day.  Mr. Lawrence attended Hamline University in St. Paul.  After two years, he transferred to The San Francisco Art Institute.  Because of the cost of living in San Francisco, he returned to his hometown of Minneapolis, and completed his B.F.A. degree at The Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1975.

In 1983, Mr. Lawrence decided to seek better opportunities in New York, and he relocated there in 1983.  He enrolled in continuing education courses at the Art Students League and The School of Visual Arts.

Mr. Lawrence’s recent exhibitions include “Second Chances” at Hudson Guild Gallery and the Ubique Gallery. Other exhibitions include: “Measured Hate,” about the rise of white nationalism, at the Puffin Cultural Forum in Teaneck, New Jersey (April 2019), Local Project Art Space, in Long Island City (2019); and “A Family Affair,” at La Pointe Center Art Gallery, in La Pointe, Wisconsin.  Mr. Lawrence exhibited at Hudson Guild Gallery in 2018 and was included in Et Tu Art Bruit,” at Andrew Edlin Gallery that same year.  In 2016, he was selected for the exhibitionReporting Fine Art,” organized by Charles Krause of Washington, D.C and selected to “Oil and Mixed Mediaat Alfa Art Gallery, in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2014Mr. Lawrence has also contributed work to several fundraising events in support of AIDS research and the environment.

Mr. Lawrence is currently at work on a series of landscapes relating to climate change and is also exploring portraiture.
